Elementary School

This week, we began eye examinations of over 300 children in an elementary school in Sambula.  These children from Kindergarten to Grade 6 were so cute and wonderful.
They were very thrilled to have us there to test their eyes.

This 5 year old girl, with some of the worst astigmatism
I've ever seen, was found to need glasses in the worst way.
This is the very reason we came to Fiji.
We can' image what her life would have
been like without wearing any glasses.

On Friday, October 30, it was World Children's Day, and the Principal asked me to speak at an assembly in the morning before they released some balloons and participated in a carnival.

Using a power point presentation, I was able to teach them
a number of things about their eyes, including proper diet,
protecting their eyes from UV lite using glasses & hats,
and all about their vision, and more...
The children seemed to really enjoy themselves.
Many of the kids would simply walk up to us in the school or in the school yard,
and give us big hugs or grab our hands.  They are such loving kids.
I must admit that Ann & I were missing our own grandkids;
but I guess we have now adopted many more.

Our shipment of the 7000 frames had been delayed, and finally arrived this week.
Now we have the big task to sort through all these boxes to find the many different
prescriptions for the several people (who need glasses) we have tested these past two weeks. I'm sure they will be thrilled to finally receive their promised glasses.

On Saturday, we took a 1.5 hour drive up to Takalana Bay
with the Greenburgs, who are new friends we made at Church.

We took a boat ride out to the reef.

Here, put on our snorkel gear and hopped out of the boat
Then, from our boat, we watched the dozens of Spinning Dolphins.

We then went on a hike up to a waterfall and found this nice deep swimming hole,
and watched a Fijian family enjoying themselves, as they cooled off in the refreshing water.

We decided to pass on swimming here, as we
had already been snorkeling in the ocean.

It was fun to watch them swing on this vine and then drop into the water.

On our hike we met with a little opposition on the pathway.

This man had made this wooden sled, himself, and was very proud of it.

 Another outstanding week in Fiji.
